Our Instruction Focus

Instructional Focus 2017-2018: As a transfer school that is preparing students for 21st century society, students and teachers will participate in a continual cycle of actionable feedback using the lens of race equity. Within each lesson, and within each element of learning, teachers will deepen students' critical thinking skills through Close Reading, Questioning, Multiple Checks for Understanding, and continual actionable feedback to improve learning.

Curriculum Mapping & Unit Planning
  • Every course should have completed semester-long or year-long curriculum maps developed using backward design.
  • It is recommended that curriculum maps contain the Essential Questions, Learning objectives, Enduring Understandings, and strands of skills, content, CCLS, and Checks for Understanding, and Assessments that students will engage with throughout the school year. (This is a reflection of Danielson 1E)
  • Units should logically follow one another, build on essential skills, and culminate in Assessments through which students will demonstrate their mastery of course content.
  • Our school templates for Curriculum Maps and unit UbDs are in the appendices of this handbook and available electronically on the Principal’s Google Classroom.
  • Teachers at BDA should use the New Visions or Engage NY curriculum as the basis for all of their instruction.
